What qualification do you get with our course?

Over the years there have been and continue to be many qualifications in journalism. The JTC Diploma in Periodicals Journalism is designed to certify that you have reached a level of competence in which editors can have confidence.

By listening to what our colleagues in the industry say they want from someone starting out in journalism, we have created a course and certificate based on those requirements.

How do I get a diploma?

You have got to work hard for it. As you progress through the ten-week course, your tutors will be constantly assessing the quality of your work and your professionalism.

We will back up this system of continuous assessment with a few exams. (You can only really judge shorthand speeds, knowledge of media law and proof-reading by tests)

But the emphasis is on judging you on your day-to-day work. That is why we will have scheduled feedback one-to-one sessions as well as ad-hoc coaching.

All this is designed to equip you for a job in journalism. We aim to give you the skills necessary to give you an edge over other applicants for the same job.

How does it work?

At the start of the course, you will be given a training logbook in which we will record your feedback and a portfolio to collect your work.

As you compile your portfolio, you will be building a body of work you can show a potential employer to demonstrate your abilities and skills.

Towards the end of the course, an external examiner - a respected industry figure independant of us - will inspect your portfolios to ensure you have have achieved the required standard. The examiner also checks to see that we have been giving you what you've paid for. So you have quality control built into the system.
