Brendan Martin

Brendan has been working as a journalism training
consultant since 1994. During that time he has
tutored journalists in the UK, Ireland, USA and the
Far East. He has trained those entering the profession
as well as experienced journalists keen to sharpen
their skills and learn new ones.

He is an Apple Mac and PC trainer who instructs in the
use of Quark XPress, Photoshop and InDesign. He is
an NVQ Assessor and Internal Verifier. He is also in
constant demand as a media law lecturer.

Brendan started his training career at the Journalism
Training Centre
(JTC) in Mitcham, Surrey where he
trained more than 200 journalists.  He was a member
of the team of three tutors who won a National
Training Award for the JTC in 1995. In 2004, he returned to the JTC with his business partner
Alan Geere as owners of the acclaimed centre.

After that he became course tutor at both PMA Training (1997-2004) and the Editorial Centre (1997). In 1998, he added the role journalism tutor at the NCTJ course at Crawley College in West Sussex to his already busy schedule. While at PMA he was responsible for revamping the course and constructing the current postgraduate qualification as well as playing a major role in gaining that course's Periodicals Training Council (PTC) accreditation.

In addition to his training work, Brendan is a freelance journalist who has contributed to a wide range of newspapers and magazines. Among the titles he has worked for are The Times, Daily Express, Sunday Mirror, The Independent, Music Week, Computer Weekly, Woman's Own and the Irish Independent group. He has been an editor of three titles through the years.

Previously he was Features Editor of TV Times and has also worked for Radio Times. He spent some years with RTE in Dublin where he worked a a sub-editor, chief sub, feature writer, reporter and production editor before becoming Editor of Ireland's largest selling magazine, the RTE Guide.

He has also worked as a radio broadcaster and television scriptwriter in which area his credits include The Two Ronnies, Dave Allen at Large, Not the Nine O'Clock News, The Bill and radio's The Archers.

Brendan says his first job in the media was in newspaper distribution - he had a paper round when he was 12.
