
Alan Geere MA
Course tutor Alan Geere is an experienced journalist,
academic
and trainer who has devised and delivered
more than 500
training workshops and seminars to
newspaper, magazine
and online journalists.
Alan’s 30-year career in journalism, which started on
the
Halstead Advertiser in Essex, has taken him
around the
world to points as far flung as Vancouver
Island in Canada
and Barry Island in Wales.
He was editor of one Britain’s smallest newspapers
– the
Diss Express in Norfolk – and associate editor
on one of
the world’s biggest, the South China
Morning Post in
Hong Kong.
He also edited newspapers in Canada and the United
States
before helping media development agencies in Eastern
Europe and China. In 2002 he led a project developing
Afghanistan’s journalism skills in Kabul and at Easter 2004
introduced a redesign at the Toronto Sun in Canada.
In the UK he was production editor of Eddy Shah’s Today and helped major titles in Cardiff, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Belfast as a consultant for Thomson Regional Newspapers. In the US he devised and implemented an innovative readership development programme in more than 100 titles across the country.
He is senior lecturer in journalism practice at the University of Westminster and previously a lecturer at City University in London on the MA International Journalism course. Alan is also a Cronkite Fellow of Arizona State University in the USA.
He is now a consultant for the Institute for War & Peace Reporting, an organisation that works exclusively in post-conflict countries, and undertakes academic research into newsroom management issues.
